ਅੰਤ ਵਿੱਚ, 25 ਸਾਲ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਵਿੱਚ, ਅਬੂ ਤਾਲਿਬ ਨੇ ਮੁਹੰਮਦ ਲਈ ਇੱਕ ਅਮੀਰ ਵਪਾਰੀ, ਔਰਤ, ਇੱਕ ਰਿਸ਼ਤੇਦਾਰ, ਖਾਦੀਜਾਹ ਦੇ ਇੱਕ ਟਰੱਸਟੀ ਵਜੋਂ ਨੌਕਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕੀਤੀ। ਖਾਦੀਜਾ ਇੱਕ ਚਾਲੀ ਸਾਲ ਦੀ ਸਫਲ ਵਪਾਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਦੋ ਵਾਰ ਵਿਧਵਾ ਸੀ। ਮੁਹੰਮਦ ਨੇ ਉਸਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੀਰੀਆ ਦੀ ਯਾਤਰਾ ਕੀਤੀ, ਆਪਣਾ ਮਾਲ ਵੇਚਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਜੋ ਉਸਨੇ ਆਰਡਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਸੀ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਖਰੀਦਿਆ। ਵਾਪਸ ਆਉਣ ਤੇ, ਖਾਦੀਜਾ ਨੂੰ ਉਸਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਨੌਕਰਾਣੀ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਉਸਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਵਿਆਹ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਸਤਾਵ ਦਿੱਤਾ।

ਰਹੱਸਵਾਦੀ ਅਨੁਭਵ
ਇੱਕ ਦਿਨ, ਚਾਲੀ ਸਾਲ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਵਿੱਚ, ਗੁਫਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਕਈ ਦਿਨ ਬਿਤਾਉਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ, ਮੁਹੰਮਦ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਅਜੀਬ ਅਨੁਭਵ ਹੋਇਆ। ਉਸਨੇ ਤਾਲ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਮਾਸਪੇਸ਼ੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਕੁਚਨ ਅਤੇ ਪੇਟ ਦੇ ਦਰਦ ਦਾ ਅਨੁਭਵ ਕੀਤਾ, ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿ ਕੋਈ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਹਿੰਸਕ ਢੰਗ ਨਾਲ ਨਿਚੋੜ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ। ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਕਰਸ਼ਣ (ਮਾਸਪੇਸ਼ੀ ਹਿੱਲਣਾ), ਸਿਰ ਅਤੇ ਬੁੱਲ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਅਣਇੱਛਤ ਹਰਕਤ, ਪਸੀਨਾ ਆਉਣਾ ਅਤੇ ਤੇਜ਼ ਧੜਕਣ ਸੀ। ਇਸ ਪਰੇਸ਼ਾਨ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਸਨੇ ਆਵਾਜ਼ਾਂ ਸੁਣੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਭੂਤ ਦਾ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਕੀਤਾ।
ਉਹ ਘਬਰਾਇਆ, ਕੰਬਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਪਸੀਨਾ ਵਹਾਉਂਦਾ ਘਰ ਨੂੰ ਭੱਜਿਆ। “ਮੈਨੂੰ ਢੱਕੋ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਢੱਕੋ,” ਉਸਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਨੂੰ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕੀਤੀ। "ਹੇ ਖਾਦੀਜਾ, ਮੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਕੀ ਗਲਤ ਹੈ?" ਉਸਨੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਕਿਹਾ, "ਮੈਨੂੰ ਡਰ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਕੁਝ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।" ਉਸਨੇ ਸੋਚਿਆ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਦੁਬਾਰਾ ਭੂਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਬਜ਼ੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ। ਖਾਦੀਜਾ ਨੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਭਰੋਸਾ ਦਿਵਾਇਆ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਡਰਾਉਣ ਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ, ਬਲਕਿ ਖੁਸ਼ ਹੋਣ ਦੀ ਆਗਿਆ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਭੂਤ ਇੱਕ ਦੂਤ ਹੋਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਸੀ ਜਿਸਨੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਖੁਸ਼ਖਬਰੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਨਬੀ ਚੁਣਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ। ਖਾਦੀਜਾ ਇੱਕ ਹਨੀਫ਼ ਸੀ, ਅਰਬ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਏਕਤਾਵਾਦੀ ਧਰਮ ਜੋ ਕਿ ਸਰਪ੍ਰਸਤ ਅਬਰਾਹਾਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਿਸ਼ਵਾਸ ਦੇ ਅਧਾਰ ਤੇ ਸੀ। ਉਸ ਦੇ ਭਰੋਸੇ ਨੇ ਕੰਮ ਕੀਤਾ, ਅਤੇ ਮੁਹੰਮਦ ਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਭਵਿੱਖਬਾਣੀ ਦਰਜੇ ਦਾ ਯਕੀਨ ਸੀ। ਇਹ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਲਈ ਢੁਕਵਾਂ ਸੀ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਇਸਨੇ ਉਸਦੀ ਮਹਾਨਤਾ ਦੀ ਇੱਛਾ ਵੀ ਪੂਰੀ ਕੀਤੀ। ਅਤੇ ਉਸਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੰਦੇਸ਼ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਚਾਰ ਕਰਨਾ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ।

ਕੁਝ ਪਰੇਸ਼ਾਨ ਨੌਜਵਾਨਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਨੌਕਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ, ਮੱਕਾ ਵਾਸੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਉਸਦੀ ਗੱਲ ਤਾਂ ਸੁਣੀ ਅਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਧਿਆਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਮੱਕਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੋਕ ਆਪਣੀ ਇੱਛਾ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਵਿਸ਼ਵਾਸ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਸੁਤੰਤਰ ਸਨ। ਮੁਹੰਮਦ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਸੀ ਇਸ ਲਈ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਧਰਮ ਨੂੰ ਤਾਅਨੇ ਮਾਰਨਾ ਅਤੇ ਅਪਮਾਨ ਕਰਨਾ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਉਸਦਾ ਮਜ਼ਾਕ ਉਡਾਇਆ, ਅਤੇ ਫਿਰ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਉਸਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਮੁੱਠੀ ਭਰ ਪੈਰੋਕਾਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹਿਜਰਤ ਕਰਨ ਅਤੇ ਅਬੀਸੀਨੀਆ ਜਾਣ ਦਾ ਆਦੇਸ਼ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਧਰਮ ਵਧਣਾ ਬੰਦ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ, ਉਸਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੰਦੇਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਨਰਮ ਕਰਨ ਅਤੇ ਸਮਝੌਤਾ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਫੈਸਲਾ ਕੀਤਾ। ਇਬਨ ਸਾਦ ਲਿਖਦਾ ਹੈ, “ਇੱਕ ਦਿਨ ਪੈਗੰਬਰ ਕਾਬਾ ਦੇ ਦੁਆਲੇ ਇੱਕ ਇਕੱਠ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੂਰਾ-ਨਜਮ (53) ਪੜ੍ਹ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ। ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ 19-20 ਆਇਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਕੋਲ ਆਇਆ ਜੋ ਪੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਸੀ, 'ਕੀ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਫਿਰ ਲੈਟ ਅਤੇ ਉਜ਼ਾ, ਅਤੇ ਮਨਤ, ਤੀਜੀ, ਆਖਰੀ ਗੱਲ' ਤੇ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ? 'ਸ਼ੈਤਾਨ ਨੇ ਪੈਗੰਬਰ ਦੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੇਠ ਲਿਖੀਆਂ ਦੋ ਆਇਤਾਂ ਰੱਖੀਆਂ। 'ਉਹ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਹਨ, ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਿਚੋਲਗੀ ਦੀ ਉਮੀਦ ਹੈ। ''
ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਨੇ ਕੁਰੈਸ਼ਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਖੁਸ਼ ਕੀਤਾ। ਉਹ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਰਥਨਾਵਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਦਾ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ। ਦੁਸ਼ਮਣੀ ਖਤਮ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਅਤੇ ਖਬਰ ਅਬੀਸੀਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਪਰਵਾਸੀਆਂ ਤੱਕ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਗਈ ਜੋ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਨਾਲ ਮੱਕਾ ਪਰਤੇ।
ਪਰ ਇਹ ਚਾਲ ਸਫਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਈ, ਅਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਨਵਾਂ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਇਸਲਾਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਤਬਦੀਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਇਆ। ਮੁਹੰਮਦ ਨੂੰ ਫਿਰ ਅਹਿਸਾਸ ਹੋਇਆ ਕਿ ਅੱਲ੍ਹਾ ਦੀਆਂ ਧੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਵਤਿਆਂ ਵਜੋਂ ਸਵੀਕਾਰ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਅੱਲ੍ਹਾ ਅਤੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਿਚਕਾਰ ਇਕਲੌਤੇ ਵਿਚੋਲੇ ਦੇ ਰੂਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਪਣੀ ਸਥਿਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਕਮਜ਼ੋਰ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਸੀ, ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਉਸਦੇ ਨਵੇਂ ਧਰਮ ਨੂੰ ਅਲੱਗ -ਅਲੱਗ ਮੂਰਤੀ ਵਿਸ਼ਵਾਸਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਲਈ ਬੇਲੋੜਾ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ। ਹੁਣ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੀ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ? ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਆਇਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਹਵਾਲੇ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਉਸਨੇ ਇੱਕ ਵੱਡੀ ਗਲਤੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਸੀ। ਕੀ ਉਹ ਕਹਿ ਸਕਦਾ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਰੱਬ ਗਲਤ ਸੀ? ਉਸ ਕੋਲ ਬਿਹਤਰ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਸੀ। ਉਸਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਦੋ ਆਇਤਾਂ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਅੱਲ੍ਹਾ ਦੀਆਂ ਧੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਵੀਕਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਸੀ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਦੂਤ ਗੈਬਰੀਅਲ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ। ਉਹ ਅਸਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ੈਤਾਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਆਇਤਾਂ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਸ਼ੈਤਾਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਉਸਦੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿੱਚ ਰੱਖੀਆਂ ਗਈਆਂ ਹਨ। ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਅਹਿਸਾਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਇਆ ਕਿ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਮੂਰਖ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ, ਜਦੋਂ ਤੱਕ ਗੈਬਰੀਅਲ ਉਸਦੇ ਕੋਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਇਆ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ, ਤੁਸੀਂ ਮੁਹੰਮਦ ਨੂੰ ਕੀ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ? ਮੈਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਆਇਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਕੋਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਿਆਇਆ ਅਤੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ "ਕੀ! ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਲਈ ਮਰਦ ਅਤੇ ਉਸਦੇ ਲਈ ਔਰਤਾਂ! ਇਹ ਸੱਚਮੁੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਅਨਿਆਂਪੂਰਣ ਵੰਡ ਹੈ! ”
ਇਸ ਘਟਨਾ ਨੇ ਕੁਰੈਸ਼ ਮੁਹੰਮਦ ਦਾ ਹੋਰ ਵੀ ਮਜ਼ਾਕ ਉਡਾਇਆ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, "ਮੁਹੰਮਦ ਨੇ ਅੱਲ੍ਹਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਦੇਵਤਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਸਥਿਤੀ ਬਾਰੇ ਜੋ ਕਿਹਾ ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਤੋਬਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਬਦਲ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਕੁਝ ਹੋਰ ਲਿਆਇਆ ਹੈ।" ਇਸ ਫਲਿੱਪ-ਫਲੌਪਿੰਗ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਇਜ਼ ਠਹਿਰਾਉਣ ਲਈ, ਉਸਨੇ ਦਾਅਵਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਕਿ ਸਾਰੇ ਨਬੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ੈਤਾਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਧੋਖਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ, ਜਿਸਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਸੀ। ਭੂਤਵਾਦੀ ਆਇਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਜੋ ਕਿ ਧੋਖੇ ਨਾਲ ਰੱਬ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਆਇਆ ਜਾਪਦਾ ਸੀ। “ਅਤੇ ਅਸੀਂ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਕੋਈ ਸੰਦੇਸ਼ਵਾਹਕ ਜਾਂ ਨਬੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਭੇਜਿਆ, ਪਰ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸਦੀ ਇੱਛਾ ਹੋਈ, ਸ਼ੈਤਾਨ ਨੇ ਉਸਦੀ ਇੱਛਾ ਦਾ ਸਤਿਕਾਰ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਇੱਕ ਸੁਝਾਅ ਦਿੱਤਾ; ਪਰ ਅੱਲਾਹ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਰੱਦ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸ਼ੈਤਾਨ ਸੁੱਟਦਾ ਹੈ, ਫਿਰ ਕੀ ਅੱਲ੍ਹਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੰਚਾਰ ਸਥਾਪਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਅੱਲ੍ਹਾ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਜਾਣਦਾ, ਸਮਝਦਾਰ ਹੈ। ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਉਹ ਸ਼ੈਤਾਨ ਨੂੰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਲਈ ਅਜ਼ਮਾਇਸ਼ ਦੇਵੇ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਦਿਲਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਰੋਗ ਹੈ। ” (ਕੁ:22: 52-53)
ਸ਼ੈਤਾਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਵੀ ਨਬੀ ਨੂੰ ਧੋਖਾ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਜਾਣ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਰਿਕਾਰਡ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ। ਦਰਅਸਲ ਬਾਈਬਲ ਕਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਅੱਯੂਬ ਅਤੇ ਯਿਸੂ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਤਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ, ਪਰ ਧੋਖਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ। ਇਸ ਲਈ ਮੁਹੰਮਦ ਪਹਿਲਾ ਨਬੀ ਵਿਖਾਵਾਕਾਰ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਸਦੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਦਾਖਲੇ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਧੋਖਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ। ਆਖਰੀ ਆਇਤ ਵਿੱਚ, ਮੁਹੰਮਦ ਦਾ ਅੱਲ੍ਹਾ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਵਿਰੋਧ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਕਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਸਦੀ ਗਲਤੀਆਂ ਵੀ ਉਸਦੇ ਵਿਰੋਧੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਗਲਤੀ ਹੈ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਦਿਲ ਬਿਮਾਰ ਹਨ।
ਤੇਰਾਂ ਸਾਲਾਂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਚਾਰ ਦੇ ਬਾਅਦ, ਮੁਹੰਮਦ 100 ਤੋਂ 120 ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਧਰਮ ਪਰਿਵਰਤਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਿਆ। ਉਸਦੀ ਪਤਨੀ, ਜਿਸਨੇ ਉਸਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ੰਸਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਉਸਦੀ ਮੂਰਤੀ ਬਣਾਈ, ਉਹ ਉਸਦੀ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਧਰਮ ਪਰਿਵਰਤਨ ਸੀ। ਉਸਦੀ ਸਮਾਜਕ ਸਥਿਤੀ ਨੇ ਅਬੂ ਬਕਰ, ਓਥਮਾਨ ਅਤੇ ਉਮਰ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਉਸਦੇ ਮਕਸਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਹੋਣ ਲਈ ਰਾਜ਼ੀ ਕੀਤਾ। ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕੁਝ ਤੋਂ ਇਲਾਵਾ, ਉਸਦੇ ਬਾਕੀ ਦੇ ਪੈਰੋਕਾਰ ਗੁਲਾਮ ਅਤੇ ਨਿਰਾਸ਼ ਨੌਜਵਾਨ ਸਨ।
 

Marriage to Khadijah

Finally, at the age of 25, Abu Talib secured for Muhammad a job, as a trustee for a wealthy merchant woman, a relative, named Khadijah. Khadijah was a comely forty-year-old successful merchant and twice widow. Muhammad made one trip to Syria in her service, selling her merchandise and buying what she had ordered. Upon his return, Khadijah fell in love with him and through a maid, proposed marriage to him.

Muhammad was a needy man, both financially and emotionally. The marriage with Khadijah was a blessing. In her, he could find the mother he had craved as a child, as well as the financial security that allowed him to never work again. Khadijah was more than willing to take care of her young husband. She had her own psychological problems who found her happiness in giving, caring, and in self-sacrifice.

Muhammad was not sociable and he was not fond of work. He preferred to withdraw from the world and retreat into his own thoughts. Even as a child, he avoided the company of his peers and did not play with them. He was often seen alone, in a pensive mood. He hardly laughed, and if he did, he covered his mouth. From this, and following the tradition of their prophet, Muslims don’t regard laughing out loud to be pious.

Narcissists need to be seen in a glorified light and be with people who would mirror to them their specialness. If that is not attainable they will withdraw to their shell and become a loner. They are not comfortable among peers. They want to have fans and devotees and they often form cults that may consist of their mate or a few devotee friends.

In his secluded imaginary world, Muhammad was no longer the cast-off, unwanted child that he had come to see himself during the early years of his life, but loved, respected, praised, and even feared. When reality became hard to bear and his loneliness overwhelmed him, he would escape into his fantasy world. In this pleasant world, he could be anyone he wanted to be. He must have discovered this realm at a very young age, when he was living with his foster family and spending lonesome long days in the desert. This idyllic and comforting world of fantasy was to become his refuge for the rest of his life. It became as real to him as the real world, only better. Leaving his wife at home with nine children to care for, he would retreat to a cave around Mecca and spent his days secluding himself from the world, wrapped in his own thoughts and sweet reveries.

Mystical Experience

One day, at the age of forty, after having spent many days in the cave by himself, Muhammad had a strange experience. He experienced rhythmic muscle contractions and abdominal pains, as if someone was squeezing him violently. He had fasciculation (muscle twitching), involuntary movement of head and lips, sweating, and rapid heartbeat. In this agitated state he heard voices and had a vision of a ghost.

He ran home terrified, shivering and sweating. “Cover me, cover me,” he pleaded with his wife. “O Khadijah, what is wrong with me?” He told her everything and said, “I fear that something may happen to me.” He thought he had become possessed by demons again. Khadijah reassured him and bade him not to be afraid, but to rejoice because the ghost must have been an angel who had brought him the glad tiding that he had been chosen as a prophet. Khadijah was a Hanif, a monotheistic religion of Arabia based on the belief in the patriarch Abraham. Her reassurances worked, and Muhammad was convinced of his prophetic rank. This suited him well, as it also fulfilled his desire for grandiosity. And he began preaching his message.

What was his message? The message was that he had become a messenger. As the result people had to respect him, love him, and obey him. After 23 years of preaching, the core message of Muhammad remained the same. Islam’s main message is that Muhammad is a messenger of God. Beyond that, there is no other message. Failure to recognize him as such entails punishment, both in this world and in the next. Even monotheism, which now is the main argument of Islam, as we shall see later, was negotiable.

With the exception of a few troubled youths and slaves, the Meccans listened to him and paid no attention. In Mecca people were free to believe in what they wanted. Muhammad wanted their attention so he began taunting and insulting their religion. They derided him at first, and then shunned him. He ordered his handful of followers to emigrate and go to Abyssinia.

When his religion stopped growing, he decided to soften his message and compromise. Ibn Sa’d writes, “One day the Prophet was in a gathering around the Ka’ba and was reading to them the sura an-Najm (53). When he came to the verses 19-20 that read, ‘Have you then considered the Lat and the Uzza, and Manat, the third, the last?’ Satan placed the following two verses in the mouth of the Prophet. ‘They are pretty, and there is hope in their intercession.’”26

These words pleased the Quraish. They had been chanting these very words in their own prayers. The hostilities ended and the news reached the emigrants in Abyssinia who joyously returned to Mecca.

But the trick did not work, and no new person converted to Islam. Muhammad then realized that by acknowledging the daughters of Allah as deities he had undermined his position as the sole intermediary between Allah and people, making his new religion indistinguishable pagan beliefs and therefore redundant. What should he do now? By attributing those verses to God he had committed a big blunder. Could he say God had been wrong? He had a better idea. He said that those two verses that acknowledged the daughters of Allah were not revealed to him by the Angel Gabriel. They are actually satanic verses, placed in his mouth by Satan. And that he did not realize he had been fooled, until Gabriel came to him and told him, what have you done Muhammad? I did not bring those verses down to you and told him to replace them with “What! For you the males and for Him the females! This indeed is an unjust division!”27

This incidence made the Quraish mock Muhammad even more. They said, “Muhammad has repented of what he said about the position of your gods with Allah, altered it and brought something else.”28 To justify this flip-flopping, he claimed that all prophets had beed deceived by Satan, who inspired them with demonic verses that deceptively seemed to come from God. “And we did not send before you any messenger or prophet, but when he desired, the Satan made a suggestion respecting his desire; but Allah annuls that which Satan casts, then does Allah establish His communications, and Allah is all Knowing, Wise. So that He may make what Satan casts a trial for those in whose hearts is diseased.” (Q.22:52-53)

There is no record of any prophet being deceived by Satan. In fact the Bible says that Job and Jesus were tempted, but were not deceived. Muhamamd is therefore the first prophet pretender, who by his own admission has been deceived. In the last verse, Muhamamd’s Allah comes to his defese and says even his blunders are the fault of his detractors whose hearts is diseased.

After thirteen years of preaching, Muhammad had no more than 100 to 120 converted. His wife, who admired and idolized him, was his first convert. Her social standing convinced Abu Bakr, Othman and Umar to join his cause too. Apart from these few, the rest of his followers were slaves and disaffected youths.
